Explosions. Steven hated them for the chaos that unfolded not to mention the fact that he had been working none stop for however many hours. He was supposed to have come off a shift earlier that day but then the twenty first had gone up and all bets were off. His shift got extended and despite the fact he had no idea what way was up anymore, he had managed to make the last run to the hospital. All survivors were out, it hurt even thinking like that because those who were still there he knew there was no coming home for them.
He knew how he felt knowing his father was never walking through the front door and the day just stirred up a lot. Steven had been stood filling out the paperwork for the last run, the guy he was working with had stocked the ambulance again and he was about to head home. Home to finally sleep after a thirty something hour shift that should have never been. He felt the tap on his shoulder as he glanced at one of the fire-fighters from the house. He was sure Ben could never have looked any worse though when he heard the words sister.
Steven was pretty sure his face had just fallen through the floor. Without thinking he had managed to commandeer the nearest nurse to check records for Isla. No if she was in the hospital he knew where she was though something was mentioned about home. Steven brought out his phone from his pocket seeing the screen was smashed; he knew he had fallen against some concrete. Likely a bruise waiting to happen but it meant he had no way of making that phone call. No, he had a key to her place she would be there right?
It was about as much sane thought as he had insisting that he was going to dropped off at his sisters place and his partner for the day could drop off the ambulance at the house for the next shift. He could only imagine what their shift would be like but there were no more live people left. Steven found himself hammering on Isla’s door as he fiddled with the bunch of keys in his hand. He threw her door open as he went to check every room for her. No she was out, out and had been seen at the site but Ben had said nothing other than he had seen her there.
Med was hardly the only hospital taking patients as he grabbed Isla’s land line phone and started to make the list of calls he never ever wanted to make. He was agitated and practically jumping around the room. He was too tired to be tired and too wound up to be calm or rational. He was still stood in his paramedic uniform, covered in smoke, soot, concrete dust and who knew what else from the day. The one person he never wanted to be anywhere near an explosion was his sister and she was missing as he hung up on the first hospital on his list as he slammed her door shut.
Cursing with ever step he took as he took to phoning another hospital. No she had to be somewhere, someone had to know as nothing but panic set in. He could feel his hands shaking as he tried to hold the phone steady but barely could managed to dial the numbers he knew. What if she was hurt, what if he had missed her there? What if he had walked past his sister in that place? No she would be okay, she had to be okay he told himself as he listened to another nurse type in the details he gave to find out if she had been taken to a different hospital.

For a moment after parking at her apartment, Isla just sat there, her hands gripping the steering wheel, knuckles turning white as she stared out the windshield into the darkness, taking a minute to let everything that had happened sink in. As crazy as the explosion had been, the rest of the afternoon had been equally strange. After Detective Sullivan had been freed from the wreckage, she'd moved on to help other injured where she could until EMS had enough resources there to handle things, then she'd ridden to the hospital in one of the ambulances with a patient, and once at the hospital she'd started helping there. The ED was overwhelmed with casualties and needed all the assistance they could get, and she'd been more than happy for the distraction. Of course, in her disheveled state, she'd been prodded to be admitted herself as a patient, so she finally found a set of scrubs and had cleaned up as best she could. Still, that didn't hide the cuts and bruises on her face and arms, and when she was questioned, she hedged and deflected, so that by the time she shuffled out to a taxi, she'd managed to avoid being checked over 'properly'. Finally, Isla got out of 'The Beast' and walked wearily to her apartment, only now realizing how hungry, tired and sore she was. Oh, right, and her hearing was still muffled, kind of nice when you wanted to be left alone, since all the background noise of life was pretty much blocked out...so long as it was only temporary. And, she mused as she unlocked her door, times like this, it would be nice to have a dog, a warm body to greet her and look at her sympathetically, that just wanted to cuddle and comfort...Immediately as she opened the door, her 'Spidey-Sense' kicked in and she tensed...something was wrong, someone was here...the light was on... She took a step back as she spotted the tall figure across the room, a storm-cloud of emotion that she recognized. Steven... Steven!?Oh, crap! Not the warm cuddly she'd been thinking about, especially since she'd kinda been hoping that he wouldn't find out... "Hey..." Steven Hudson ,

Steven was about to start tearing chunks of hair of out his scalp as he waited for people to answer, people to check details which yes he was fully aware of the disaster at the twenty first. The influx of patients that would swamp the hospitals and the transports nightmares for all those other patients. He knew that they would be diverted for that extra five or ten or half hour to the nearest available emergency room. He knew the drill, he had just come back from living that drill but right now he had no patience for ‘just hold a moment’.
He was beside himself with worry and when he worried, he worried like ten people might. Steven was too busy pacing at first to notice the door opening, until he saw the light from outside and a shape in the door way. Isla, please let it be Isla he thought to himself as he paid little attention to the voice on the other end of the phone. He barely had time to think before he dropped the phone to the floor, he could get her a new one who cared right now about a phone.
“Isla!” He practically screeched at her, it was her name yes but right at that moment saying it made it real to the fact she was stood there. Alive even though his eyes had get to take in the cuts and bruises she had. There was little chance he was feeling warm and cuddly at all, no he was feeling too tired to know much about anything other than the fact he wanted to cry. No he would shoot himself in the foot before doing that in front of his sister but then he was too tired to stop himself as he heard her ‘hey’.
Steven found himself still hopping from foot to foot as he tried to shout or tried to come up with anything to say that remotely resembled a telling off. “Thank god.” Was about all he managed to breath as he was sure five more minutes and he would have been calling himself an ambulance for heart failure. Without a second thought he launched himself at his sister to take her into a hug. “Where have you been?” He asked practically in an accusing tone though he meant nothing by it.
“You never called, what the hell were you doing at the precinct... you could have been killed don’t you know that!” He began trying to breath but then that required stopping talking and he was too wound up to do either. All he wanted to do was hug his sister and make sure she was safe, his baby sister that he had failed to be there for that day and he could have lost her in the chaos. At least he knew Emily was with the FBI guy who had her back while they waited out the person who was after one sister. Isla, no his baby sister was to be nowhere near trouble but today she had managed to find it.

"Fine, I'm fine," Isla insisted, her words muffled against his shoulder, although they were ringing inside her clogged head. She didn't resist him, it felt good to have someone taking charge for a few minutes and not have to rely on herself, as much as she didn't want to be fussed over. "I was at work," she explained, "I had to go to the police station to sign for some evidence." She looked up at him. "I didn't plan to be there, and then everything just..." Oh, man, just talking about it made her start to lose it and she could feel tears welling up, something she really had wanted to avoid."I was so scared, but there were injured people, I had to help, there was screaming and blood everywhere, and the ceiling crashed on us..." Then she remembered about calling...or not...and dug her phone from the pocket of her scrubs, showing him the smashed screen. "I was gonna call, but then I got busy at the hospital and..." She sighed, then muttered, "Can I sit down now?" He was the only thing keeping her upright. Steven Hudson ,

Fine? Was she really trying that one on with him right now. There was nothing fine about any of this at all. Steven was good at fussing over people and right then fussing over Isla was needed because about two minutes ago he was trying not to think that he would be calling Emily to say that Isla had been hurt or worse. No fussing was what he was going to be doing for at least the next ten days and likely ten years after that.
“Yeah everything went boom I know, I was there I saw what it looked like after that.” Steven stated firmly, “What if you had... evidence no you ask a cop to come to you. You’re not their secretary.” He added though he hardly wanted to upset her but if the cop had gone to hear that would have been two less people in that building at the time.
Hearing his sister was scared it broke his heart, Steven had seen a bit in his time but the precinct was up there with the worst. Knowing that his sister had seen it too, no he wished he could have protected her from all of that. Letting Isla talk he just held her firmly, she was there so she was alive and when he looked at her phone screen he just smiled. His was the exact same though when she asked to sit down Steven nodded.
"You're safe now, I won't let anything happen to you." He said as he helped her over to the couch as he glanced over her. “Did you even get yourself checked out at the hospital?” Steven asked her figuring that her going to call went hand in hand with an ‘I was going to but then got busy’ speech. To him sure he knew being busy could take over but to him there was nothing more important than making sure she was alright as he reached for her wrist to take her pulse as he glanced at his watch. He might not have an ambulance full of gear but if he needed it he would make the call in a heartbeat.

"I went to the hospital..." Not a lie, but not an answer. "And I know what you're doing." Isla nodded to his fingers at her wrist. Of course, this wasn't to be unexpected, after all, he was Steven and it was his 'job', to fuss over his sisters. "I'm all right," she tried again, managing a little smile. "Probably feel better after a shower, get all this crud off me." But then the cuts and bruises would be more obvious, even if being clean would well be worth it. "I do have a pulse, right? And I can tell you who I am, where I am, what day it is and what happened. Well, all right, most of what happened.' The actual explosion was a bit muddled in her head, but she clearly remembered the rest. "So, no concussion, no major bleeding, no broken bones...and, oh, yeah, you can keep your job, I have no ambition to be in the field." She grinned at him, then rolled her eyes back and collapsed against him before giggling at him. "Kidding! You need to lighten up!" Steven Hudson,

Steven knew the none answer of not a lie; he already knew she was at the hospital because she told him as much. Steven raised his brow hearing Isla; she knew what he was doing as he glanced at his fingers at her wrist. Yes pulse check; it was a normal thing to do he thought especially upon hearing his sister had been in an explosion. Letting someone else check over her, yes it was fine but he trusted few people in the world and he wanted to know a good job had been done.
“All right, you’ve been in an explosion no one is all right Isla.” Steven stated though getting a shower, yeah that sounded like a better course of action. At least that way he could see what was going on with her, cuts, bruises and the like. “Yes you do and I know you can but that’s not the point, you’re a nurse you know people can be fine one minute and in an OR the next so yes I’m making sure you’ve got a pulse.” Family was family and taking chances, it was fine when it was his own life never anyone else’s.
Steven was listening to Isla talking about broken bones, concussions and bleeding when he watched her eyes roll back. “ISLA!” He screamed at her though her giggling; she was fine collapsed patients never giggled. “Lighten up, are you kidding me right now.” Steven wanted to yell at her for it but then knowing she was okay it was a little like fighting two side of himself. He tried to laugh too but it came out as a mumbled ha, a one syllable word as he hugged her tightly to him not sure if he wanted to cry out of panic, frustration, relief or worry.
“What is something happened to you? What about Emily, mum or Alyssa and the fact that you’re going to be an auntie. Do not kid about this, it’s important that you’re all right.” Steven stated though announcing baby news like that he doubted it was the best way but then it had to come out some time.

As soon as she saw the expression on his face, Isla felt bad for teasing he brother, it really hadn't been nice, especially considering how their dad had died. "But I'm here and I'm..." Oh, heck! He wasn't going to leave her alone until she relented, so she may as well get it over. "All right. You win. Just let me get clean first." She stood on her toes to kiss his cheek. "I love you, you know. And I'll be quick, no makeup or fluffing. Besides, I don't want to survive all that just to die from cancer from all the carcinogens that were flying around and settled in my hair!" She was teasing again, sort of, but there was a grain of truth in the fact that dust in those situations was potentially lethal. True to her word, she was in and out of the shower, dressed in sweats and headed back to the living room in fifteen minutes. She was carrying a back pack that she handed to him. "I know, slumber party at your place." He'd insist she stay with him the night, or vice-versa, so there was no point in even fighting that. "But, hey, I get to ride in my Mustang, huh?" Steven Hudson

Steven was the sort of guy who was prone to panic, give him the explosion and that was okay. He could deal with that but give him a family member hurt or missing, anything like that and he was a bag of nerves. Listening to Isla, it was true she was there but it made no different to him going down the what if rabbit hole of life.
“Good and yeah you’re not getting in my mustang like that.” Steven joked knowing he himself still needed to grab a shower and clean off from the day. Between the panic and worry he had barely managed to do more than clean his hands though the stench of gloves still lingered. It was the one down side, he smelled like a rubber glove factory at times on a busy day.
“I love you too and exactly you get cleaned up and I’ll be right here.” Steven said as he chuckled, dust was a killer mostly because there was no clue as to what was in it. The building was old so it might meet building codes on the face of it but under the drywall and plaster board who knew what lurked beneath. Yeah he really needed a shower once he got home.
Steven sat down on the couch for a moment, his head in his hands as he realised just how tired he was from the day. The key to not feeling it was to keep moving though he had made that fatal mistake of sitting for those few minutes he was waiting on Isla. Steven glanced at her when he saw her carrying the back pack as he got up and took it from her.
Old habits he figured, “Yes you are and glad you know not to even argue it.” He teased knowing he would put up a fight over it and make sure that she was going to go with him. “See I knew there was a reason behind it all, you just want to sit in your car, but I can understand it. It’s a great car.” Steven replied smiling as he picked up his keys from the table. “So shall we? And I need to talk to you about some stuff too if you feel up for it.” He added.

"Oh, um, my head hurts sooooo bad!" Isla dramatically put a hand to her head and rolled her eyes. "I think it's going to hurt until, I'm, like, sixty or something, so I don't think I'll ever be up to anything!" Her laugh was cautious, mindful of the real pain a full-out laugh would cause. "Well, I guess you've been nice enough to me, I'll let you say your piece after I get the all clear." Despite her snarky teasing, she was moving slowly beside him, not well-concealing the aches and pains that were getting worse with time. And, she realized, she was starving, she hadn't eaten since lunch, maybe seven or eight hours ago, and she knew it was going to be at least another couple hours before she had a chance. Wearily, she got into the car as her brother held the door for her, then buckled in as she relaxed into the seat. "This really is comfortable," she murmured, "but it's no match for Priscilla!" Steven rolled his eyes at his sister, “Oh trust me I can make it hurt a lot longer than sixty and exactly, you just stay home where it’s safe for you and then I no longer have to worry.” He suggested grinning, oh he would likely drop dead before that even happened. Then if he managed not to drop from the shock he would be assuming another angle on the idea, not at Steven was overly suspicious but there were times when he just felt there was another way to look at it.
“Thanks because I need to tell you so you won’t go and do anything else stupid like get yourself involved in explosions.” He added, a baby changed things for him. He was still unsure exactly how it was all going to work but the one thing he did know what that if the worst happened to him. He wanted to make sure that there was a family around to help out Alyssa if she wanted it. He knew that after his dad has passed it was hardly easy so any family that could help he was going to ask the favour of.
Steven could easily see that his youngest sister was doing a pretty bad job of hiding the pain she was in, not that he ever wanted her to but then it only proved his point for him. She was in no shape to be on her own and was going to get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible. Dropping her bag in the back Steven went around to the driver’s side and got in just in time to hear about Priscilla.
“You’re joking right... my Taurus doesn’t have the name Priscilla... Thor, Iron Man something less. Priscilla ish.” He said chuckling as he started the car and pulled out into traffic driving straight for the hospital. “Maybe you did hit your head too hard and forgot the car is a He.” Steven added grinning.

"A 'he'?" She looked over at him, her gaze distant as she seemed to be thinking. "A he...right...not Priscilla, no...it's Milton, I think...or maybe Elmer? You know, like Fudd? Yeah, that was it." She managed a smile, then sighed and shook her head. "You know I didn't go there just to get blown up, it's just my luck that I got that instead of the lottery or something." She chuckled. "You know, the 'Hudson Luck'...win the not-so-good prize!" Yeah, she could play the lottery for a million years and not win a cent, but go the the police station for ten minutes and she hits the 'explosion' jack pot! "So, whenever you want to say, you can..." she frowned, "what did you say? You're really Iron Man? Cool!" Steven Hudson

Watching his sister try and come up with a new name was funny though at the mention of Pricilla he winced. “Milton or Elmer... wow my poor little baby has just been destroyed.” Steven said with a sigh, “My baby cannot recover from that so he is well and truly your car now.” Yes he was joking but sure cars were his pride and joy, well beyond family though to him the car might as well have been an extended family member the way he had looked after it.
“Yeah us Hudson’s take the crap so the rest of the world doesn’t have to but you know, if you think it’s your lucky day run out of wherever you are.” Steven said, he had to admit planning to get blown up was a pretty bad idea but then Isla was right; there was no luck like theirs at all. He was just glad that she was alright, he could never imagine what life would be if he lost one of his sisters. If he did it meant he had managed to fail his dad, mum and the family in general.
“Yeah I am, why has it taken you this long to realise that.” He teased laughing, “Me Iron Man and my car it Kit, it talks and helps me with saving the world all day long.” So sure he knew that Iron man was real, he just hid himself away from Mankind pretty well these days. “But I did want to tell you something serious.” Steven added grinning at her for a moment, “How would you feel if one day you were to be an auntie.” He asked deciding to leave it there for her.

"Auntie?" Leaning her head back, she closed her eyes against her headache. "Sure, that would be a lot of fun...a little niece or nephew to spoil then give back." There was a bit of a grin as she shrugged. "Teach bad habits to, give 'em drums for their birthday..." Her brain was slow to process, but her eyes suddenly opened and she sat forward to look at him. "Hey, Em's not pregnant, is she and she didn't tell me?" But as far as she knew her sister wasn't even seriously dating, so that was a bit of a surprise. The sudden movement caused a wave of dizziness and nausea, so she leaned back again. "But yeah, that'd be cool. I guess one of us has to give Mom grandkids and it's not like either of us is gonna do that any time soon." It wasn't as if she was in a hurry -- she had a new career and wanted to get a more set in that, and heck, she kinda needed a boyfriend first, much the less a husband. "It's be nice..." Steven nodded listening to Isla talk about being an auntie, he always figured it would be one of his sisters first. The ten extra Hudson kids running around though Steven had managed to go about things backwards, his first wife had died and this time he had been dating and gotten his girlfriend pregnant without the declaration of marriage. He was still unsure how that would be taken but then it was all to find out he guessed.
“Oh you teach them bad habits sure and no drums, unless they are your kids then I’d get them set up with a rock band.” He teased though when he saw her eyes open he figured she might have worked out where he was going with things. Then the mention of Emily, Steven in turn was the one to almost stare his eyes out of his head. “Woah what gives you that idea? Emily... since when is she seeing anyone?” Steven spluttered.
Steven washed Isla, no she was getting checked out by the hospital no matter the protest. Even if it was just to be told she had a concussion he hardly cared. At least she had an answer and he could trust that a doctor had seen her. “Glad you think it’d be nice.” Steven said with a grin as he focused on the road for a moment.
“Well about that ‘any time soon’ part.” Steven added, “In a few months there will be an extra Hudson to add to the family. Not sure if it’s a boy or a girl yet but you know how I’d said I was seeing someone.” It was a little complicated to explain. Steven was hardly great when it came to women or at least sticking with anything serious mainly because he could never get anyone to understand the hours. Those that did usually kept different hours so being in the same place was a difficult thing.
“I guess what I’m saying is that Alyssa and I are pregnant. Well she is and we’re or well she is having a baby. So you get to be an auntie sooner than you’d think. I just haven’t told mum yet and I won’t until well... I will just not yet.” He explained keeping his eyes on the road not sure what Isla would think about it all. The last thing he wanted to do was disappoint her so if he kept his eyes on the road then at least he was unable to see any disappointment she might have if she was.
